The University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos split the weekend series of battle of top 7 programs during the first weekend back after the Holiday break.
On Friday night the Bronchos couldn’t hold back the Cyclones in the third period as UCO lost the lead and game when Iowa State stormed back for 4 unanswered goals in the third period.
UCO started the game with Taylor Herndon giving the Bronchos an early lead in the first period. Iowa State came back to tie the game in the second when ISU’s Kramer scored off a floater in the slot, but UCO dominated the rest of the second firing 20 shots on the Cyclones net. The Bronchos finally broke the tie with a short handed goal by Landon Robin. The statement the Bronchos were trying to make against the 7th rated team in the Nation became blurred when ISU scored on two odd angle shots that found their way through UCO’s Alex Henry within two minutes of the 3rd period. Iowa State added two more scores despite being outshot in the game 41-31.
The Bronchos were hoping not to let history repeat itself on Saturday night as Andrei Novikov scored midway thru the first period on a snap shot from the left circle. Iowa State scored to tie the game with 2 seconds left in the first period on a turn over in the corner and a pass to the slot in front of the Broncho net where ISU’s Severson put it away. The Cyclones carried that momentum into the second period and took advantage of the Broncho netminder, Jacob Wallstedt losing his stick to put the Cyclones ahead going into the 2nd intermission.
The third period started and so did the Broncho comeback, as Landon Robin scored just 55 seconds into the period. UCO’s Josh Wyatt scored midway thru the third period on a powerplay goal to take the lead and the game 3-2.
UCO is back home next weekend as Robert Morris University of Pennsylvania come to town to take on the Bronchos. Both games start at 7:30pm with Saturday night being Skate with the Bronchos immediately after the game.
