The University of Central Oklahoma claimed their second ACHA Men’s D1 National Championship Tuesday night. The Bronchos faced #3 seed Ohio University in the finals at the OhioHealth Ice Haus in Columbus, Ohio located just about an hours drive north of the Ohio University Campus. The Ohio fans overwhelmed the stands inside the Ice Haus and greatly outnumbered those that were able to make the trip to cheer on the Bronchos, but the team would not be rattled by the crowd.
UCO Winger, Andrei Novikov scored the first goal in the contest late in the first period placing the Bronchos on top of Ohio 1-0, heading into the first intermission.
The Bronchos would carry that momentum into the second period where both goal tenders would stand tall in the pipes and wart off several attacks until Josh Wyatt was able to capitalize on an assist from Donald Danroth in the 17th minute of the second period to extend the Bronchos lead 2-0.
The Third Period was fast and furious with both teams trying to jump out and take the momentum early. Ohio would test UCO’s goalie often throughout the duration of the period, but Alex “The Glove” Henry would have none of it turning away all attempts in the contest. The Bobcats pulled their goal tender late to give them an extra attacker, trying to even the score. That’s when Donald Danroth and Brandon Formosa would connect with Josh Wyatt to seal the game, scoring on the empty net pushing the lead 3-0 for the final score.
Sr. Sam Rice took home MVP honors from the tournament.
