The University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos started the WCHL league games with a sweep of Missouri State and Arkansas.
Thursday night featured the first league games of this young season against a much-improved Missouri State Ice Bear team. The Ice Bear team was the most penalized team in the nation last season, but they have entered this season with a renewed focus and were only penalized twice during the Thursday night game. The result was a very close game with the defending National Champion Bronchos.
UCO opened the scoring with Kolby Steen but Missouri State tied the game late in the first period before Landon Robin tipped in a shot from Tyler Minx. Missouri State proved to be a formable foe when they tied than took a one goal lead midway through the second period. UCO rallied three minutes later with a Bayley Marshall score to knot it up before the game winning goal by Spencer Peratalo midway through the third period for a 4-3 win.
Friday and Saturday games were against the Arkansas Razorbacks in which the Razorbacks proved to be hard to put away. On Friday night UCO’s Josh Wyatt opened the scoring but Arkansas scored twice on their only two shots of the period on netkeeper, Jacob Wallstedt. UCO tied the game 4 minutes later on a powerplay goal from Brandon Formosa. Despite outshooting Arkansas 22-2 during the first period the Bronchos were tied going into the first intermission. The second period proved to be the deciding period as UCO scored 4 goals as Josh Wyatt got the Hat Trick and Grayden Hohl found the back of the net twice for a 6-4 victory.
Saturday night was a different story as the Bronchos scored early and often with goals from Austin Cunningham, Bayley Marshall, Drake Cartwright, Donny Danroth and two goals from Regan Yew. Getting the shutout was UCO goaltender, Alex Henry. The Bronchos outshot the Razorbacks 45-16 in route to a 6-0 victory.
The Bronchos host a battle of top ACHA teams as Lindenwood University comes to the Broncho Ice Barn this upcoming Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Friday night is a special night for UCO as they are promoting a “Pink in the Rink” night in which they will have raffle tickets and donation tables set up for support of the Susan G Komen foundation.
