The University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos had their biggest test of the season when the Lindenwood Lions came to town and came away with a split.
Friday night the Bronchos struggled during the first period under the high pressure forecheck by the Lions. If not for the suburb goaltending by UCO’s Alex Henry the Bronchos would have been behind instead of even going into the first intermission. The momentum that Lindenwood established eventually lead to a 2-0 lead before the Bronchos put on the pressure the last quarter of the second period and throughout the third period. UCO’s Andrei Novikov pulled the Bronchos within one, but the tying goal eluded the Bronchos with several quality chances including a last gasp effort with Alex Henry pulled for an extra attacker. The Lions escaped with a 2-1 victory.
Saturday’s game was another thriller as the Lions and Bronchos went toe to toe with action on both sides of the ice. Lindenwood struck first during the first period but UCO’s Tyler Minx tied the game with a breakaway pass from Andrei Novikov. UCO extended the lead when Josh Wyatt found Kolby Steen in front of the net midway through the third period. The Lions tied up the game late in the third period, which resulted in UCO’s first Overtime game. With time in the extra frame ticking down to just 1:15 left, UCO’s Spencer Peratalo tallied the game winner with an assist by Gage Joel and Bayley Marshall.
“That was two incredibly tough games. Our new players now know how hard they have to play and execute to give us a chance to win. Alex Henry was incredible all weekend”, said UCO’s Head Coach, Craig McAlister.
The Bronchos have one more home weekend series against Midland University of Nebraska before going on 4 straight road weekends. Games are Friday night at 7:45pm and Saturday night at 7:30pm at the Arctic Edge.
