ADRIAN COLLEGE NEW NO. 1 TEAM IN ACHA MEN’S DIVISION 1 RANKING
Bulldogs Take Top Spot for First Time Since 2012-2013 Season
UNION LAKE, Mich. – (November 15, 2017) – Adrian College, the only remaining undefeated team, moved into the top spot in the 2017-2018 American Collegiate Hockey Association Men’s Division 1 Ranking No. 9. The Bulldogs (14-0-0) swept the University of Michigan-Dearborn (7-3, 4-1) to take the No. 1 ranking for the first time since 2012-2013 (Ranking #17), when they entered the 2013 Men’s Division 1 National Championships as the top seed.
Minot State (13-1-1) fell to No. 2 after receiving its first regulation loss of the season against the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. The Beavers started off its trip with an 8-1 pasting of Arizona State University. Minot State then headed to Nevada where the Rebels got the upset win on Friday (2-1) before the Beavers responded with a 5-4 win on Saturday to escape Las Vegas with a split.
Lindenwood University (13-1-3) jumped up to No. 3 after sweeping Missouri State University at home. The Lions defeated the Bears 6-3 on Friday before handing an 8-0 whitewashing on Saturday.
The University of Colorado (15-2-1) dropped a spot to No. 4 after losing to arch-rival Colorado State University in an overtime-shootout on Friday night in Boulder, Colo. The Rams scored twice in the last minute to send the game into overtime, before eventually winning the shootout 1-0. The Buffaloes got revenge on Sunday afternoon at the Pepsi Center in downtown Denver, home of the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, with a 3-0 victory.
Rounding out the Top 5 is Robert Morris University Illinois (11-4-0) which jumped up three spots after winning all three of its games as it hosted the Robert Morris University Illinois Showcase. The Eagles defeated Western Michigan University (5-2) on Friday, Robert Morris University Pennsylvania (6-1) on Saturday, and Illinois State University (3-0) on Sunday.
Moving into the polls this week are No. 24 University of Rhode Island and No. 25 Arizona State University.
The Central States Collegiate Hockey League leads the way with all five of its member teams ranked, while the Western Collegiate Hockey League has six (of 8) of its member teams ranked, the Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League has five (of 9) of its member teams ranked, and the Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League has four (of 8) of its member teams ranked.
The computer ranking will for the fifth time determine the 20 teams that qualify for the 2018 ACHA Men’s Division 1 National Championships, which will include the following six autobids:
A total of 60 teams are competing in Men’s Division 1 this season, including three new teams: Calvin College, New York University and University of Nevada-Las Vegas. The two teams that have departed Men’s Division 1 include Binghamton University and Indiana Tech.
The ACHA uses two computer rankings generated by USHSHO.com, Ranking A (Wins with Maximum Goal Differential of 7) and Ranking B (Wins with Maximum Goal Differential of 1), and come up with an average of the two rankings. The ACHA will then use the list generated from the average for its weekly ranking. Ties will be broken using the higher ranked team from Ranking B until the Top 25 teams are listed. Games that go to a shootout will be scored as ties.
In its 27th season of action, there have been a total of 13 schools that have won the ACHA Men’s Division 1 National Championship:
The 2018 ACHA Men’s Division 1 National Championships will be hosted March 8-13 for the second consecutive season by the Greater Columbus Sports Commission, Columbus Blue Jackets, and OhioHealth Chiller Ice Rinks at the OhioHealth Ice Haus, in Columbus, OH. This will be the seventh year of the 20-team format.
The tenth ranking of the regular season will be released on Wednesday, November 22, 2017.
