The University of Central Oklahoma Hockey team sweep the Mercyhurst University Lakers from Erie, Pennsylvania on Friday and Saturday night.
Friday night the Bronchos built a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals by Austin Cunningham and Alex Durbeniuk. Donny Danroth made it 3-0 within the first minute of the second before Mercyhurst scored their lone goal of the night to make it 3-1. The Bronchos scored three additional goals in the second period from Josh Wyatt, Donny Danroth and Jake Daughtry to push the lead to 6-1. The third period was another performance from the Bronchos by scoring three more goals from Josh Wyatt, Jared Guffey and Brandon Formosa. UCO held the Lakers to just 11 shots on UCO’s, Alex Henry compared to 60 shots taken on the Mercyhurst goaltender.
Saturday night was the same sort of night in shots 64-22 but a different game.
UCO got the first goal by Josh Wyatt but Mercyhurst tied the game midway thru on the Broncho netminder, Jacob Wallstedt. The period ended in a 1-1 tie and the Lakers had the confidence they lacked in the first game.
The Lakers opened up the second period scoring at the midway point of the game only to have Donny Danroth tie the game up less than a minute later. The physically picked up as both sides had penalties start to pile up as 9 penalties were called between teams during the period. With just 26 seconds remaining in the period, Bailey Marshall broke the tie and the Bronchos never looked back as Nail Mills scored midway thru the third period before Mercyhurst scored again to tighten things up again. The Lakers pushed but the Bronchos, Kolby Steen answered back with just a minute remaining to get the insurance goal at 5-3.
UCO goes on the road this weekend to play the 3rd ranked team in the nation, the Lindenwood University Lions.
